CERPHEC Malaria Program
Centre for Research and Preventive Health Care since 2004 has strategically continued to engage communities in the fight to prevent and halt the spread of malaria especially amongst the poor and vulnerable in our communities
- The overall goal of CERPHEC’s malaria interventions is to reduce the overall incidences of malaria especially amongst children under 5, pregnant women and nursing mothers in Nigerian communities.
- To promote appropriate behaviors that will reduce malaria transmission, and increase access to malaria prevention, treatment and management services.
CERPHEC malaria intervention has been funded internally through donations from board members. In 2008 CERPHEC launched a comprehensive rural malaria intervention in Aruogba community which was flagged off by the Hon. Commissioner for Health Edo state. Our malaria intervention targets nursing mothers, pregnant women and children under five. Since 2008 when the organization first gave out nets, the centre has distributed over 20000 Long Lasting insecticide Treated Nets, built capacity of parent teacher association members in the communities and trained over 200 Roll Back Malaria partners excluding individuals reached LLITN distributed through the general population activities. The centre has also received support from the Society for Family Health, Association of Civil Society on Malaria Immunization and Nutrition and the Civil Society for HIV and AIDS in Nigeria to continue her community sensitization and education activities. So far, CEPHEC has with the support of ACOMIN, SFH and CiSHAN reached over 100 communities spread across LGAs in Edo and Delta states.
HIV and AIDS Program
The Centre’s HIV and AIDS program has been ambitiously implemented to reach Edo, Delta Ondo and Rivers states. CERPHEC had earlier in 2005 and 2006 respectively received support to reduce police harassment of female sex workers and implement palliative home based care for persons living with HIV and AIDS.
- To contribute to the national response aimed at reducing the spread and mitigating the impact of HIV and AIDS.
- : To scale up HIV prevention among at risk persons and especially improve the health and well being of people living with HIV/AIDS.
Implementation Strategies
The strategy for implementing HIV/AIDS intervention has been Community mobilisation, Peer Education and Peer session Monitoring, general population interpersonal communication sessions, special rallies/outreaches to include; night outs, film shows quiz and football competitions, community drama, implementing IGA activities, Mobile Counselling and Testing, Syndromic Management on STIs, establishment of condom outlets and Distribution Of Condoms, Formation of Support Groups/home based care, care for OVC, training of formal and non formal health services providers, formation of community based organizations, home visits and referrals.
Intervention coverage (Edo, Delta, Ondo and Rivers)
Centre For Research and Preventive Health Care has carried out comprehensive HIV/AIDS intervention in Agbor, Umunede, Asaba, Ofumwengbe (popularly known as Okada Junction along the Benin Lagos road) and its environs, Ekiadolor and it adjoining communities and its environs, Former Benin- Lagos road Toll gate, Ahor cattle Market by the by pass (Lagos-Abuja) Road, Time out, Osse river Rubber Estates (Edo and Ondo states), Utomwen Hotel and Okomu Oil Palm Company, collaboration with NLNG Port Harcourt.
